London newspaper John Bull 7 Nov. 1825: William Nettleton, collector of cash, in the employ of Messrs. Trewman, printers of the Exeter Flying Post, which situation he has held two years and a half, has absconded with, it is supposed, several hundred pounds, and although diligent search has been made on the authority of a warrant for his apprehension, he is not yet taken. Appointed schoolmaster to St Brides Charity School, London June 1828 from a "public establishment". Admitted to Newgate Prison 16 Mar. 1830, resident in Peckham and had a wife and six children, then aged 40, born in Plymouth, former occupation bookseller. Old Bailey sessions papers 15 Apr 1830 tried for embezzlement, having appropriated three £5 notes paid by the Ironmongers' Company to the school on 1 July 1829. Verdict: guilty. Punishment: none, sentence respited, recommended to Mercy by Mr. Devey, having a wife and six children and granted a free pardon and released from prison on 18th June.
