Widowed in 1871 ; married Mary Farley, two children born c. 1873 and 1875. Died: 1909. Probably succeeded to Thomas Roberts business on his death. A drawing made by the Italian Protestant exile Count Piero Guicciardini, who was apparently attending a meeting of Plymouth Brethren in October 1853 in Kingsbridge, shows a shop front with the name "FRIEND-ROBERTS" and the picture is labelled: 'a casa di Mr Friend-Roberts, librojo, presso cui sono stato' ('at the house of Mr Friend-Roberts, bookseller with whom I stayed'). Further down the hill on the right is the caption 'Ingresso all' alto solajo dei Fratelli' ('Entrance to the upstairs attic of the [Plymouth] Brethren'). Friend was probably connected with the Plymouth Brethren. As a widower he was still living at the Stamp Office, Fore street with his daughter Emily in 1871 where he had published the Kingsbridge Gazette since 1854. He disposed of his interest in the Gazette to Charles Fox in November 1873 when he removed to Plymouth. (S.P. Fox, Kingsbridge and its Surroundings (Printed by G P Friend, Plymouth 1874) p. 41]. Continued as publisher in Plymouth. Bookseller (2 Apr. 1877 p. 392) announces dissolution of partnership with Thomas Gregory Gutch (probably formerly of Southampton) in the business of 'Printers, Stationers, Bookbinders, Stereotypers and Lithographers and carried on at Nos 60 and 61 Union Street, Plymouth under the firm of Friend and Co'. In 1877 he and others appear to have registered a patent 'for an invention of "Improvements in the manufacture of artificial leather"' (Commissioners of patents' journal 24 Sep. 1880 p. 623). In 1881 described as "Manager of a brewery, 8 Bedford Terrace". By 1891 he and his wife had moved to Fulham London where they were living with his daughter Emily and her husband.
