Mesoamerica. Register of codices and inscriptions

Mesoamerica. Register of codices and inscriptions

This draft listing of Mesoamerican codices and other early documents which record indigenous cultures is compiled as part of a wider survey of the world's written heritage. It was first started in the 1960s as a youthful enthusiasm and has only recently been updated during the Covid-19 lock-down.

It is being used as a means of testing the data schema being drawn up for the Devon bibliography, which aims to include all formats of the written record, whether script, print or hypertext, but relating to a completely different written heritage from that of Mesoamerica. It is hoped that the data schema developed will make possible cross-cultural historical studies by meeting the challenges posed by the differing structures of language, script and society across the five continents and the five millennia since humankind first became literate. In Devon the bibliography will be maintained by volunteers, so the data structure is being kept as simple as possible - a wikiography rather than a bibliography. For Mesoamerica is hoped to extend coverage to inscriptions, particularly for the Maya region, which have some interesting parallels to official publications, ephemera and published imagery in South West England.

This listing is offered very much as work in progress by an amateur in the field of Mesoamerican studies in the hope that its content will be of some value. As with the Devon bibliography, the source code of the listing is a tab delimited (TSV) text file that can be freely copied into spreadsheets to produce listings for personal use. There is still work remaining to be done in rationalising the content of some of the columns and there are many records waiting to be matched and integrated.

Codex Aubin 1576 Aztec/Colonial. Manuscript. 1576-1596, 1608. —

Public domain - courtesy British Museum
Pictorial history or annal of the Aztecs from their departure from Aztlán, through the Spanish conquest, to the early Spanish colonial period, ending in 1607. Consisting of 81 leaves, it was most likely begun in 1576, it is possible that Fray Diego Durán supervised its preparation, since it was published in 1867 as Historia de las Indias de Nueva-España y isles de Tierra Firme, listing Durán as the author. James Lockhart has published an extract of Codex Aubin in Nahuatl and English dealing with the section on the conquest of Mexico.[9] According to Lockhart, the internal evidence is that the author was a man from the Mexico-Tenochtitlan sector of San Juan Moyotlan, writing around 1562, who wrote from collected material on the earlier era, including the conquest, and then began writing in his own voice about current events of the late sixteenth century.[10] Unlike the account of the conquest of Mexico in the Florentine Codex, which is primarily from the Tlatelocan viewpoint and denigrates the Mexica of Tenochtitlan, Codex Aubin is from the Tenochtitlan perspective and makes no reference to events in Tlatelolco.[11] Lockhart sees Codex Aubin as an authentic account likely from oral sources. Among other topics, Codex Aubin has a native description of the massacre at the temple in Tenochtitlan in 1520. Also called "Manuscrito de 1576" (“The Manuscript of 1576”), this codex is held by the British Museum and a copy of its commentary is at the Bibliothèque Nationale de France. A copy of the original is held at the Princeton University library in the Robert Garrett Collection. The Aubin Codex is not to be confused with the similarly named Aubin Tonalamatl. Codex Barberini Libellus de Medicinalibus Indorum Herbis. Aztec/Colonial. Codex.

Public domain - Wikimedia Commons
Also known as the Badianus Manuscript. Latin for "Little Book of the Medicinal Herbs of the Indians") is a herbal manuscript, describing the medicinal properties of various plants used by the Aztecs. It was translated into Latin by Juan Badiano, from a Nahuatl original composed in the Colegio de Santa Cruz de Tlatelolco in 1552 by Martín de la Cruz that is no longer extant. The Libellus is better known as the Badianus Manuscript, after the translator; the Codex de la Cruz-Badiano, after both the original author and translator; and the Codex Barberini, after Cardinal Francesco Barberini, who had possession of the manuscript in the early 17th century.

Codex Borgia Mixtec. Codex. 1500? - Manuscript, screenfold ; 10.3 m ; 76 pages on 39 leaves ; 27 x 26.5 cm. —

FAMSI, Loubat edition
Pre-Hispanic ritual codex. Part of the Borgia Group. Consists of 14 pieces of Mexican deer skin of varying length, glued together to form a continuous strip, 10 m. x 27 m., covered with writing on both sides; it is folded into 39 leaves, one side of the first and last being attached to covers, forming a volume 27 x 27 cm. One tradition has that a former member of the Congregatio de Propaganda Fide rescued the codex from a public burning of "superstitious and idolatrous" books in Mexico, in 1762, and forwarded it to Cardinal Stefano Borgia in Rome. Another version relates that the codex came to Italy with the expulsion of Jesuits from Spain in 1767. Thirdly, Alexander von Humboldt relates that Cardinal Stefano Borgia, who died en route to the coronation of Napoleon in 1804, made the Congregatio heir of his possessions, except for his private museum, which was to go to his brother, Giovanni Paolo Borgia. Codex Borgia was found to be among this collection, and after a decade of struggles the Congregatio acquired it. Ritual cult and calendar of Mixteca. It is divided into one cultic part and three mantic arrangements of the Mixtec pantheon, each beginning with one 260-day cycle, the tonalpohualli. The cultic part of the codex cannot be found in any other manuscript, and it represents the cult associated with only one town, Cholula. -

Codex Boturini Aztec/Colonial. Codex. 1530/1541. —

Wikimedia Commons: Museo Nacional de Antropología, Mexico City
See also Codex Aubin. Painted by an unknown Aztec author some time between 1530 and 1541, roughly a decade after the Spanish conquest of Mexico. Pictorial in nature, it tells the story of the legendary Aztec journey from Aztlán to the Valley of Mexico. Rather than employing separate pages, the author used one long sheet of amatl, or fig bark, accordion-folded into 21½ pages. There is a rip in the middle of the 22nd page, and it is unclear whether the author intended the manuscript to end at that point or not. Unlike many other Aztec codices, the drawings are not colored, but rather merely outlined with black ink. Also known as “Tira de la Peregrinación” ("The Strip Showing the Travels"), it is named after one of its first European owners, Lorenzo Boturini Benaduci (1702 – 1751).

Codex Egerton Mixtec. Codex. Manuscript, deerskin is folded into 32 pages, with dimension approximately 27 x 22 cm. —

FAMSI, Graz edition

Held by: British Musem, London: Codex Egerton 2895. — Egerton 2895, also known as Codex Sánchez Solís, Codice Zapoteco, or Codex Waecker Götter, is the history of a Mixtec noble family, covering twenty-six generations, starting from about A.D. 970 and ending around the 1540s. The manuscript was probably in possession of the Mixtec noble family that commissioned it, and the erasures within the genealogy may have served private interests in litigations that occurred over land-ownership in colonial Mexico. In 1883, the manuscript passed from Sánchez Solís to Waecker-Götter in Berlin. The British Museum acquired it in 1911. Using Spanish script, the manuscript contains commentary on place-names written in a native Mexican language, part of which has been erased or damaged.

Codex. 1558/1560. — Set of 12 books originally created under the supervision of Bernardino de Sahagún 1558-1560. It is a copy of original source materials which are now lost, perhaps destroyed by the Spanish authorities who confiscated Sahagún's manuscripts. Each of the 18 months is represented by a god or historical character. Written in Spanish, the Codex Ixtlilxochitl has 50 pages comprising 27 separate sheets of European paper with 29 drawings. Codex Laud Mixtec. Codex. Manuscript: screenfold: 4 m. ; 24 leaves ; 16.5 x 15.7 cm. –
Held by: Bodleian Library, Oxford: MS. Laud Misc. 678. – Codex Laud was presented to the Bodleian Library by Archbishop William Laud in 1636, beyond which we have no historical proof of its origins. The manuscript was mistaken for an Egyptian manuscript, and probably made its way to Laud via Central Europe. The codex is similar to Fejérváry-Mayer and Cospi in format, style and color. Like Borgia, this codex is concerned with the divine tonalpohualli, and is part of the so-called Borgia Group. The codex has been described as Cuicatec, Macatec, or Olmec in origin, and C. A. Burland (see companion volume) asserts that it is definitely not Mixtec.. — -

This manuscript, known as the Codex Mexicanus, includes records pertaining to the Aztec and Christian calendars, European medical astrology, a genealogy of the Tenochca royal house, and an annals history of pre-conquest Tenochtitlan and early colonial Mexico City, among other topics. Though filled with intriguing information, the Mexicanus has long defied a comprehensive scholarly analysis, surely due to its disparate contents. In this pathfinding volume, Lori Boornazian Diel presents the first thorough study of the entire Codex Mexicanus that considers its varied contents in a holistic manner. She provides an authoritative reading of the Mexicanus's contents and explains what its creation and use reveal about native reactions to and negotiations of colonial rule in Mexico City. Diel makes sense of the codex by revealing how its miscellaneous contents find counterparts in Spanish books called Reportorios de los tiempos. Based on the medieval almanac tradition, Reportorios contain vast assortments of information related to the issue of time, as does the Mexicanus. Diel masterfully demonstrates that, just as Reportorios were used as guides to living in early modern Spain, likewise the Codex Mexicanus provided its Nahua audience a guide to living in colonial New Spain."--. -

Codex Osuna Aztec/Colonial. Codex. 1565. — Named after the Spanish nobleman, Mariano Tellez Grion y Beufort, twelfth Duke of Osuna, in whose library the codex was held until his death in 1882 and then became part of the collection of the Biblioteca Nacional in Madrid. Part of a lawsuit by the indigenous of a Nahua community against Spaniards, and a fragment of a much larger Mexican text; the first numbered folio in the facsimile is 464. A set of seven separate documents created in early 1565 to present evidence against the government of Viceroy Luis de Velasco during the 1563-66 inquiry by Jerónimo de Valderrama. In this codex, indigenous leaders claim non-payment for various goods and for various services performed by their people, including building construction and domestic help. A modest black and while facsimile was published in Mexico by the Instituto Indigenista Interamericano in 1947, reproduced from the 1878 edition published in Madrid. The Mexican edition includes 158 pages of documentation in Spanish found in the Archivo General de la Nacion (Mexico) added by Luis Chávez Orozco. The Codex was originally solely pictorial in nature. Nahuatl descriptions and details were then entered onto the documents during its review by Spanish authorities, and a Spanish translation of the Nahuatl was added. The Nahuatl text was translated by Ignacio M. Castillo and the Spanish paleography rendered into modern Spanish by María del Carmen Camacho. The pictorial on folio 471v (p. 198 of the Mexican edition) shows the Viceroy Don Luis de Velasco, with indigenous lords in colonial attire for their rank, as well as a nahuatlato or Nahuatl translator in Spanish attire. The illustration is the cover for Charles Gibson's monumental publication, The Aztecs Under Spanish Rule. Other important pictorials include depictions of Spaniards punishing indigenous (folio 474v, page 204), lists of encomienda holders, including ones reverting to the Spanish crown (folios 496v - 498r; pages 250-253); cultivation of cacti for the production of the red dye cochineal (folio 500v, p. 258), and indigenous men laboring in a textile workshop or obraje (folio 500v, p. 258). The last pictorial is of indigenous men laboring to extract and transport stone for the construction of a church (folio 501 v., p. 342), with a written complaint that they had not been paid. The 1947 Mexican edition is augmented by documentation in Spanish found by Luis Chávez Orozco in the Mexican archives (Archivo General de la Nación), Ramo Civil, tomo 644, giving contextual information for the pictorial Codex Osuna, and is perhaps the "lost portion." The Spanish documentation includes the review of an indigenous official's tenure, or residencia, and is typical of Spanish official documentation of the era.

Codex Tro-Cortesianus Maya. Codex.

FAMSI, Graz edition
Also knwn as Codex Madrid. - The united manuscript is 6.7 m long with 56 leaves. Page dimensions are 12 x 24 cm. -
Held by: Museo de América, Madrid. - Mayan astrology and divinatory practices, gods of the four cardinal directions, New Year rites. Although the style of the hieroglyphs is uniform, the codex is the work of eight or nine scribes. In 1869 Abbé C. E. Brasseur de Bourbourg published a Mayan manuscript called the Codex Troano, having studied the original in the possession of paleographer Don Juan de Tro y Ortolano. After the death of Juan de Tro, the masnuscript was sold to the Museo de América de Madrid. In 1872, José Ignacio Miró, a collector in Madrid, purchased another Mayan manuscript, known as Codex Cortesiano, which he sold to the Museo de América de Madrid, where the Codex Troano was held. When Léon de Rosny discovered that the two manuscripts were two parts of the same, the complete manuscript was named Codex Tro-Cortesianus, and later Codex Madrid. In 1999 the age of the codex was brought into question when Michael D. Coe claimed that a European paper fragment within p. 56. suggested that the codex was from the seventeenth century.

Codex Vaticanus A Aztec/Colonial. Codex. Manuscript codex: 101 fo ; 46.5 x 29.5 cm. -

FAMSI, Loubat edition

Held by: Biblioteca Apostolica Vaticana, Vatican City: Codex Vaticanus 3738. - Codex Vaticanus (Latinus) 3738 is also known as Vaticanus A or Codex Ríos. Painted between 1566 and 1589 either in Mexico or in Italy. The religious section of the codex, the tonalamatl, was drawn by natives to European request. The codex contains Italian commentaries to the paintings, which describe ritual and divinatory practices as well as historical events. Unlike that of Borbonicus, the tonalamatl of Vaticanus A is not a screenfold but a book after European fashion. Italian text written by the Dominican Pedro de los Ríos, hence one of the names of the manuscript. J. Eric S. Thompson has argued that the Codex Telleriano-Remensis is the Mexican, while the Vaticanus is the Italian copy of a now lost prototype called Codex Huitzilopochtli. -

Codex Vindobonensis Mixtec. Codex.

FAMSI, Graz edition

Held by: Österreichische Nationalbibliothek, Vienna: Codex Vindobonensis Mexicanus I. Codex Vindobonensis (or Vienna) is often paired with Zouche-Nuttall in terms of its style and content. The obverse side (pp. 52-1) records the history of the princes of the city of Tilantongo, as well as genealogical and mythological subjects, such as a story of the mythical prehistory of gods. The obverse side is carefully drawn, while the reverse (pp. numbered as I-XIII) seems to have been painted in greater haste, suggesting that the two sides were painted at different time periods by different masters. The reverse side contains dates ranging from 720 and 1350, and is unfinished for unknown reasons. It is likely that one of the "two books after the Indian fashion," sent to Spain by Hernando Cortés in 1519, was Codex Vindobonensis Mexicanus I, however there is no evidence. The first known European owner of the manuscript was King Manuel I of Portugal, and the manuscript arrived in Vienna in 1677 into the possession of Emperor Leopold I. The manuscript, deerskin folded in an accordion fashion, has been glued to two wooden boards, and the average size of each page is 22 x 26 cm.

Codex Zouche-Nuttal 1320/1400. —

FAMSI, Graz edition
Also known as the Codex Nuttall, this screenfold is a good representation of most pre-Conquest Mixtec manuscript styles, and is very close to Codex Vindobonensis. Nothing is known about its history prior to its appearance in 1859 in the San Marco Dominican monastery in Florence. Thereafter it made its way as a gift to the English bibliophile Robert Curzon, Lord Zouche, after whose death his son and namesake inherited it. The younger Lord Zouche gave permission to the Peabody Museum to make facsimile editions of the manuscript in 1898. Zelia Nuttall organized the Peabody edition and attributed the original to be of Aztec origin. It was later the Mexican archaeologist Alfonso Caso, who in 1949 published his conclusions about the origins of Zouche-Nuttall being Mixtec. The Zouche-Nuttall screenfold is a long strip of deerskin over 11 meters long, containing forty-five pages painted on each side of the skin. One page is 24.5 x 19.1 cm on average. The two sides have their own distinct characteristics, suggesting that at least two different individuals worked on it. Both obverse and reverse sides use light and dark red, blue, purple, black, and gray. However, green and light yellow appear only on the obverse side, while dark yellow is only used on the reverse. The obverse of the screenfold describes a brief summary of events concerning Lord 8 Wind, and a longer history of Lady 3 Flint. The reverse relates the history of the Mixtec ruler 8 Deer "Jaguar-Claw." Portions of 8 Deer's life are also recounted in Vindobonensis (reverse), Bodley, Selden and Colombino-Becker 1. Emily Rabin has determined 8 Deer's lifespan to be from A.D. 1063 to 1115.The oldest of the existing Mixtec histories: the story ends with the birth of Prince 6 Water, who must have lived around 1320, according to codices Bodley and Selden. (See Alfonso Caso, Interpretación del Codice Selden (Mexico City, 1964), p. 62.). -
