Election ephemera: Ide

Devon election ephemera : Ide burlesque election.

The burlesque election at Ide took place after many of the general elections between the mid-eighteenth and mid-nineteenth centuries. For 1812 there is a listing of the ephemera circulated in The spirit of election wit, at the City of Exeter, and County of Devon : together with the burlesque election at Ide, in the year 1812, containing the whole of the addresses, speeches, songs, and squibs, including the origin of the titular borough of Ide (Exeter : Printed by R. Cullum , 1812). Cullum included no items from the Ide election in his similar compilation for 1818, so the burlesque election may not have taken place that year.

Ide. 1754? [Ide election]. – [Exeter?] : [s. n.] , [1754?]. - Verse: The election for Ide is over we hear; Old Cobley declined it and would not appear. Mentions John Eaddy who ridiculed Sir Thomas Bury, merchant of Exeter who stood unsuccessfully as a candidate for a Cornish borough. Presumably Thomas Bury MP for Newport, 1741-1754. Bury was returned for Newport by his brother-in-law, Sir William Morice. As a Tory he was not re-nominated by Humphry Morice, who succeeded to the Morice estates in 1750. - Sources: Cullum (1812), p. 116.

Ide. 1754? [Ide election]. – [Exeter?] : [s. n.] , [1754?]. – Verse: The election for Ide is over we hear; No party revenge therein did appear. Mentions Packer, farmer of Ide and Smith, apothecary of Exeter. - Sources: Cullum (1812), p. 116.
