DEV_Exeter. Farleys. 1745. Printers.

DEV_Exeter. Farleys. 1745. Printers. CAREW, Bampfylde Moore. The life and adventures of Bampfylde Moore Carew, the noted Devonshire stroller and dog-stealer; as related by hmself, during his passage to the plantations in America. Containing, a great variety of remarkable transactions in a vagrant course of life, which he followed for the pace of thirty years and upwards. - Exon : Printed by the Farleys, for Joseph Drew, bookseller, opposite Castle-Lane , 1745. - [2],v,[1],152p ; 8°. - Dredge p.47 (T.N.Brushfield). - Held by: Devon Heritage Centre. - Davidson p.143 (British Museum). Editions, variant copies, and piracies of this popular work have multiplied. Examples of what is conventionally called the first edition are rare: CH Wilkinson in The King of the Beggars: Bampfylde –Moore Carew (London, 1931), p.307 commented that the family may have destroyed all the copies they could lay hands on. The ESTC lists only three in permanent collections - at the British Library, and at the university libraries of Nottingham and Virginia, all with the imprint above. The second edition is conventionally distinguished by the absence of these words, by the correction of errors in paging and the inclusion of a small amount of additional text. ESTC lists eight copies - three copies are located in the United States one of them at the Huntington Library. In a copy owned by Susan Moore the title page is that of the first edition. Thereafter its pagination is continuous, the text is extended, concluding with a short reference to Carew’s imminent transportation to Maryland. The rough portrait of Bampfylde Moore Carew prepared for the first edition has been removed from this copy and replaced by the large engraving made for the 7th edition (1763). The engraving which did not appear in subsequent editions is sometimes to be seen as a single sheet and it seems likely that it is one of these that has been appropriated here.
