Henry Parker Such was one of the last London publishers of broadside ballads. In a letter to the folk song collector Francis James Child dated 23 August 1890 (Harvard University, MS Eng 863, Appendix no. 5) Sabine Baring-Gould writes: The only three printers of Broadside ballads now in London are Fortey, S. Andrew’s St Seven Dials. He has no catalogue & no collection of his old ballads. Still – you can have something from him. Then there is Such, 177 Union St Borough, who has a catalogue. It is now out of print, but he is reprinting. A third is Taylor 92 Brick Lane Spitalfields. I have not been to him to see if he has a catalogue. |

This provides useful dating evidence for the catalogue digitised here. Baring-Gould started to collect folk songs in 1888 and, according to Martin Graebe, by May 1891 he had "filled five of the eventual nine albums of broadsides that formed the centrepiece of his collection" in the British Library (L.R.271.a.2). Many of the ballads must have been acquired directly from the printers, whom Baring-Gould visited when he was in London, or from 1891 he could have ordered from the catalogue. In Songs and ballads of the West published that year he writes (p. xliii) in a passage where he justifies the amendments made to sanitise some of the texts: We resolved, where the old words were good, or tolerable, to retain them intact. When bad, to re-write, adhering as closely as possible to the original. Where the songs were mere broadside ballads we have had no scruple in doing this, for we give reference to the pressmark in the British Museum, where the broadside may be found, or give the number of Mr. Such's series, so that anyone interested may purchase it for a halfpenny. |
